Education. Creativity. Advocacy.

"When a young person cannot succeed in the environments we have created, changing the young person cannot be our only answer."

I have spent most of my professional life figuring out how to make things work better for people. For more than twenty years, I did that as a creative director. Today I do it as an educator.

I am especially interested in young people whose social, emotional, and behavioral needs make conventional educational pathways difficult and in what becomes possible when adults are willing to reconsider the environment as well as the student.

Increasingly, I think of my work through the lens of a practitioner-scholar: someone who takes research seriously, remains grounded in practice, and translates both into ideas that other people can actually use.

Education, Curriculum & Instruction

I currently work at a therapeutic residential special education program as a licensed Curriculum & Instruction Specialist, special educator, and academic case manager.

I am particularly interested in rigorous instruction that remains realistic about the conditions under which students actually learn. For students with significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs, access to instruction is closely connected to engagement, regulation, relationships, scaffolding, motivation, and the design of the learning environment.

I also direct Creative Futures, an evolving arts and vocational program designed to give students access to meaningful creative work and authentic skill development to discover interests, competence, and potential roles beyond conventional academic pathways.

Creative Direction

Before becoming an educator, I spent more than two decades working in creative direction and experiential marketing — turning ideas into experiences, developing concepts, environments, communications, and audience experiences while balancing creative ambition with budgets, schedules, and production realities.

Creative direction taught me to begin with questions. Those questions followed me into education and to understand that students with social, emotional, and behavioral challenges cannot always realistically be asked to fit society's mold, but instead, it is society that needs to allow them to belong differently.

Who is the audience?

What are we asking them to do?

Why would they care?

Where is the friction?

What assumptions are we making?

What else could we try?

Belong Differently Rigorously realistic. Fiercely imaginative.

Belong Differently is my emerging independent educational publishing and advocacy project focused on young people with significant social, emotional, and behavioral needs.

When a young person cannot succeed in the environments we have created, changing the young person cannot be our only answer.

Current work includes Dessert First, a framework examining whether meaningful opportunity must always follow readiness; The Morning After, focused on what happens to the adult after high-intensity student behavior; and Step Off the Curve, a family-facing framework for making difficult decisions when conventional options do not fit.
